My Turn at the Eye Doctor

I've really never had eye problems until the "gel" in my left eye changed when pregnant with Mitchell. It contracted and caused me to have what's known as a floater. When I saw the eye doctor for this, she told me if I saw flashes to come in.

Well I started to see flashes. More worrisome because someone I work with just had surgery to correct a detached retina. I cannot fathom what it would be like to undergo such a thing! As you can imagine, I got myself back to the eye doc right quick.

Once again I was told - perfect 20/20 vision and I am so very, very thankful for that. And after my first experience of eyes being dilated, she confirmed retina attached, healthy eyes...no problem. I am having what's known as ocular migraines. Migraines without the pain (thankfully) but with eye disturbances. For me I see what looks like a reverse image of my iris a few times an hour. It's extremely irritating.

The cause? You'd never guess...STRESS & CAFFEINE. Not sure I'll chuck either cause, but I do think my body is telling me something so I will try to reduce on both counts.

In case you are interested, from some doctor advice site:

"Usually, an ocular migraine is not cause for concern. But ocular migraine symptoms can interfere with daily activities, such as reading and driving. These episodes, also called migraine aura or optical migraine, occur without a headache and are relatively common. During an ocular migraine, you may see:

Flashes of light
Zigzagging patterns
Blind spots
Shimmering spots or stars

No one knows exactly what causes ocular migraines. In some people, it's related to eating certain foods such as chocolate, nuts, shellfish or artificial sweeteners such as aspartame. Others may have ocular migraine episodes brought on by caffeine or alcohol. Some believe that tension and fatigue are linked to this condition, but researchers have not found a consistent link. It's possible that you may have several ocular migraine episodes in a short interval of time, and then not experience any for months or even years before experiencing additional episodes."

Stacey - glad you had a good report at the eye doc. Love the sidebar pictures of Luke with the gravity-defying hair and Mitchell with the sweet smile!
